Vital Statistics - Basenji
| KUSA Group | Hound | |
Original Function |
Cental Africa, as hunting dogs. | |
| Modern Function | Mostly as pets but are still used by indigenous tribes in Africa for hunting. | |
| Weight | Ideal weight: Dogs: 11kg Bitches: 9.5kg |
|
| Height | Ideal height at the withers: Dogs: 43cm Bitches: 40cm |
|
| Average Lifespan | Average 12, but they have been known to live as long as 18/19 years of age. | |
| Health Checks | Eyes - Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) is the most severe; Coloboma; and Persistent Pupillary Membrane (PPM) can be an issue. Fanconi syndrome (renal) - the gene has just been identified so reliable testing is now possible and breeders should be able to eliminate this problem a few generations. Hip dysplasia (HD); IPSID (intestinal disease) and Thyroid deficiency. | |
| Best Characteristics | Intelligence and energy. Cleanliness. No yapping – although they are not mute. | |
| Less-than-best Characteristics | Intelligence and energy! It means they can be unbelievably destructive if bored. They can also turn into escape artists – again if bored. This is not a breed that is right for every home. | |
| Living Space – Indoors/Outdoors | Inside – they do not have an undercoat. | |
| Some questions to ask Breeders | Ask to see the Sire (if available) & Dam. Are the puppies KUSA registered; have puppies been de-wormed and vaccinated; have they been tested for genetic diseases; how long has breeder been breeding; what support can the breeder give you should you encounter health or other problems with your Irish Wolfhound? |
