Appearance

The Boerboel is a large dog.  It has prominent and well-developed musculature over the entire body with buoyant movement – an impressive and imposing figure of strength.

Weight

Males: ±70-80kg. Females ±50-60kg

Height

Males: ±66 cm; Females ±61cm (ideal heights)

Coat Colour

All shades of yellow, brown or brindle.
Coat Texture Short and thick hair – dense pelt.

Grooming

Demands little attention, apart from normal parasite control.

Personality/Temperament

Obedient and manageable, reliable, watchful, self-confident.

Compatibility with other dogs

Good, but alpha dominance amongst same sex may play a factor.

Compatibility with cats and other animals

Good, depending on upbringing.

Compatibility with people/children

Good, depending on upbringing.

Best Characteristics

Loyal companions; brave, protective and loving towards their family; excellent all-round family and working dogs.  A well-bred healthy Boerboel with correct temperament is awesome.

Less-than-Best Characteristics

Can be very dominant and require correct rearing and training.  Some (minority) are prone to excessive slobbering.  The size of the landmines!

Living Space – Indoors/Outdoors

Both – do well inside and outside. Need attention and love.

Space and Exercise

Can live happily in a smaller environment, but needs lots of exercise in any event.

Reacts well to owner’s instructions. Training advised.

Noise Factor

Quiet.  Will alert owner to perceived threat.
Average Lifespan
10-12 years
Feeding Any good quality dog food – follow manufacturers recommendations for age and weight.

Health Check

Hip dysplasia; elbow dysplasia, Eye problems including entropion and ectropion; vaginal hyperplasia; cruciate ligament ruptures.  Like other large breeds can be susceptible to bloat. 
Availability Enquire via SABT/SABBA for reputable breeders and healthy puppies.    Be prepared to wait for well-bred puppies.  Not all reputable breeders are members of clubs so ask around.
Some questions to ask Breeders Are the puppies registered with SABT/SABBA;  are they dewormed and vaccinated;  are the parents health tested; ask to see both parents of the litter if possible.
