Fact File - Boxer
| KUSA Group | Working; FCI Group 2 | |
Original Function |
To grab and hold prey until huntsman arrived; also used for bull- baiting and dog-fighting.
| Modern Function | Family dog and companion; and service and protection dog. | |
Appearance |
Compact, square build and strong bone, combining strength and elegance. Athletic & active with distinctive head, well-developed, sleek muscles and proud, noble bearing.
Weight |
Males: ±30-35kg. Females ±25-30kg |
|
| Height | Males: ±57-63cm; Females ±53-59cm |
|
| Coat Colour | Fawn (from light fawn to deer red) or brindle, with black mask and white markings. Completely/predominantly white Boxers are not suitable for breeding or showing. Coat is short, smooth, hard & glossy without undercoat. | |
Grooming |
Naturally clean; occasional ‘brush and rub’ keeps coat sleek and shiny.
| Personality/Temperament | Extrovert, energetic busybodies, love nothing better than being with their human family. Loyal and patient, but due to their exuberance, not ideal for the very old and frail or for very young children. | |
Compatibility with other dogs |
Good if well-socialized. Not a good idea to have two entire males together. Bitches normally get on well with dogs and other bitches, but there are exceptions.
| Compatibility with cats and other animals | Not a problem if reared with other pets. | |
Compatibility with people/children |
Excellent. | |
Living Space and Exercise |
Must be part of the family; do not enjoy being too hot or too cold. Don’t like being left alone for long - will indulge in modification of your garden, laundry or other property. Need daily exercise; companionship & mental stimulation.
Suitability as Watchdog |
Alert, confident, fearless family protectors, but do not count on them guarding your property when you are not there. If a Boxer barks, there is a reason.
Average Lifespan |
10 to 12 years. | |
| Feeding | Feed high-quality dog food - follow manufacturer’s recommendations for age and weight. Boxers also thrive on BARF (Bones & Raw Food). | |
Health |
Generally healthy, but heart disease and cancer are the two main concerns. Hip dysplasia in some lines. Guard against gastric torsion.
| Availability | Enquire via Clubs for reputable breeders and healthy puppies. This breed is popular and a lot of indiscriminate breeding is taking place. Be prepared to wait for well-bred, registered puppies! | |
| Some questions to ask Breeders | Ask if possible to see both parents. Are the puppies registered with KUSA; are they de-wormed and vaccinated? Were the parents tested for genetic disorders? |
