Fact File - Corgi (Welsh Corgi - Pembroke and Cardigan)

KUSA Group   Herding
Weight Ideal weight:
Pembrokes: Dogs:  10-12kg; Bitches: 9-11kg
Cardigans: approximately 17kg
(weight to be in proportion with size - balance is important)
Height Ideal height at the withers:
Pembrokes: 25-30 cms
Cardigans: 30 cms
Average Lifespan Pembrokes 12 to 15 years; Cardigans 12 – 14 years
Health Checks Pembrokes:  The Pembroke is a healthy breed compared to a lot of other breeds. Hip dysplasia (HD) – hip scoring is necessary if you are going to breed. Obesity, though not hereditary is a big problem in the breed. Pembrokes are big con-artists - do not believe those appealing eyes when food in any form is available, and do not believe what the dog food bag says about how much to feed. Feeding a good name brand without table scraps in any form is all that is needed for a happy healthy dog.  Cancer seems to be a growing problem.

Cardigans:  Cardigans can be susceptible to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA); HD; intervertebral disc disease; urolithiasis and ophthalmic disorders including progressive retinal atrophy.
Best Characteristics Both Pembrokes and Cardigans are  loving, friendly, loyal, and intelligent members of the family who want to watch TV with you.  They are adaptable to any size home, be it a cottage, manor house or farm and happy in any environment as long as they are part of the family.  They have an acute hearing that helps them detect unfamiliar noises and are good watchdogs.  They are endearing dogs which bond closely with their owners.
Less-than-best Characteristics House-proud owners must be prepared to regularly groom the Pembroke which has a heavy double coat and loses this on average once a year. Most coats require little maintenance at other times.  The Cardigan is a very intelligent breed, which if bored, finds things with which to entertain themselves.  This may not be to their owners liking.  They need firm obedience training and can be very stubborn.  Never shout at them as they will hold it against you for a while!
Living Space – Indoors/Outdoors Definitely inside dogs – Corgis are very social and like to be with people.
Some questions to ask Breeders Ask to see the Sire (if available) & Dam. Are the puppies KUSA registered; have puppies been de-wormed and vaccinated; have they been tested for genetic diseases; how long has breeder been breeding; what support can the breeder give you should you encounter health or other problems with your Irish Wolfhound?
