Original Function

 Used by huntsmen to go down foxholes.
Modern Function All-round pets – working and agility.

Appearance

 Should be neat, stocky little dogs with good earset and good coat.

Weight

Ideal weight:   Dogs:    6 – 7 kg

                      Bitches: 5 kg
Height

Ideal height:    Dogs:    11 – 12 inches

                      Bitches: 10 – 11 inches
Coat Colour Tan & white;  black & white;  tricolour
Coat Texture Rough;  smooth;  broken-coat

Grooming

 Minimal – but rough coats need a lot!
Personality/Temperament Alert, active and happy.

Compatibility with other dogs

 Good
Compatibility with cats and other animals Good if introduced properly.

Compatibility with people/children

 Brilliant!

Living Space – Indoors/Outdoors

 Both – but indoors in the evening.

Space and Exercise

 Exercise is important.  Space – just a standard garden – but must be properly fenced.

 Amazing!

REALLY alert – better than big dogs!

Noise Factor

 Minor – they bark for a reason, e.g. presence of a snake, or an intruder.
Average Lifespan
15 – 16 years.
Feeding Feed a high-quality dog food - follow manufacturers recommendations for age and weight.

 Wonderful, strong dogs.
Availability Enquire via Clubs for reputable breeders and healthy puppies. Be prepared to wait for well-bred puppies!
