Original Function

Gundog/Retriever.
Modern Function Companion.

Appearance

Elegant, pretty; light, free movement; covered by unique waterproof non-shedding curly coat.

Weight

2kg (Toy) to 24 kg (Standard) 

Height

Toys: 11 inches and under; Minis: 11 inches to 15 inches; Standard: over 15 inches (average 22 to 25 inches).

Coat Colour

All solid colours – mainly black, brown, white, silver, blue, apricot and red.

Coat Texture Harsh outer coat, softer undercoat.

Grooming

Often – this breed has a coat that requires regular grooming.

Personality/Temperament Outgoing, fun, very intelligent, playful.

Compatibility with other dogs

Excellent.
Compatibility with cats and other animals Good – especially if raised with them.

Compatibility with people/children

The perfect temperament!

Living Space – Indoors/Outdoors

Mainly indoors.  

Space and Exercise

Lots of exercise – they hate to get bored and need human companionship.

Trainability

Very trainable; but very obedient even without training.
Suitability as Watchdog
Not suitable, although Standards can be very protective of their owners.

Noise Factor

Average – smaller sizes can be yappy.
Average Lifespan
10 to 15 years.
Feeding Feed high-quality dog food – follow manufacturer’s recommendations for age and weight. Some Poodles can be fussy eaters.

Health

Excellent. There are some known genetic disorders.
Availability Enquire via Clubs for reputable breeders and healthy puppies. Due to popularity of the breed, a lot of indiscriminate breeding is taking place. Be prepared to wait for well-bred puppies!  
Some questions to ask Breeders Ask if possible to see both parents. Are the puppies registered with KUSA; are they de-wormed and vaccinated? Have you tested for PRA in Toys and Minis and HD in Standards?
