Original Function

Cattle drover and other general farm duties.
Modern Function Companion, sport and service dog.  

Appearance

Medium large, powerful and robust. Should give the impression of great strength, agility and endurance.

Weight

Dogs approximately 50kg, bitches 42kg
Height Dogs 61-68 cm, bitches 56-63cm
Coat Colour Always black with clearly defined tan or mahogany markings.
Coat Texture Coarse and dense

Grooming

Minimal but regular brushing is recommended especially when shedding.
Personality/Temperament Good-natured, very obedient, biddable and eager to work.

Compatibility with other dogs

Generally good if socialized.  Might not tolerate the same sex easily.
Compatibility with cats and other animals Excellent if socialized. 

Compatibility with people/children

Being self assured and steady, the Rottweiler is very compatible with children and people. 

Living Space – Indoors/Outdoors

Needs access to the outdoors but happiest when close to the owner.

Space and Exercise

Moderate space requirements.  Regular exercise is important for mental and physical well being.

Feeding Feed a premium dog food, especially when growing.  Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for age and weight. Fresh water must always be available.   

Health

Good to excellent.  Orthopaedic problems are the main concern.  HD is strictly controlled in KUSA registered stock but other joint disorders like Elbow Dysplasia, Osteochondrosis and ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligaments can also occur.
Availability Enquire via Rottweiler clubs for reputable breeders and healthy puppies. Be prepared to wait for well-bred puppy. 
Some questions to ask Breeders Rottweilers are social and friendly in the presence of their owners so the sire and dam must be approachable. Request to view original health certificates and pedigrees. Are the puppies KUSA registered? Have they been de-wormed and vaccinated? Have the parents been independently assessed for their compliance to the Breed Standard?
