Howling Huskies Sledding Team holds weekly dry-land sleds at Riversands Farm near to Dainfern estate. It is a social club that meets every Sunday morning at sunrise during the winter months of the year to run their working-breed dogs. Contrary to the name, many folk run other working breeds too.
Members have their own gear and depending on their preference, run their dogs canni-cross where the owner (or musher as we refer to them) runs behind the dog connected by a bungee-type line from a belt around the waist to the dog’s harness. This certainly is for the more energetic amongst us. Have you ever tried to outrun a husky?
Other alternatives include scooter or bike-joering where a single dog or pair of dogs runs in front of a scooter. This is a fantastic workout for the dogs and they absolutely love it! Howling Huskies also has a bigger kart which is run with a team of six, eight, twelve or sixteen dogs. This certainly is for the experienced among us but is a true sledding experience.
First-timers and those who are still deciding whether sledding is for them are welcome to come through. Some of the more experienced mushers will lend a hand. There is plenty of club equipment to go around and the dogs will absolutely love it!
