Microchipping
As from September this year it will be compulsory for all KUSA members to microchip their dogs.
Make sure they get BackHome
What does the Back Home pet permanent identification system offer?
- Back Home is only sold through veterinarians to ensure that the implanting procedure is correctly done by a professional, and that every registration ensures ownership (eliminating the possibility of fraudulent ownership).
- The new, advanced Back Home Bio Tec micro-chips are made of a high grade surgical acrylic capsule (PMMA), which reduce migration (the biggest draw-back of glass microchips) by 80%, are far more robust (less possibility of breakage) and have improved electrical components (less failures).
- Virbac, a leading veterinary company in South Africa, runs the Back Home database. All pets microchipped with BackHome are captured on the Back Home Database at no additional cost to you for the life of your pet (once-off payment, no annual levies, no delivery costs, for the life of the pet).
- The Back Home database is accessible to you, all Welfare organisations and veterinarians, 24 hours a day, every day of the year ‘online’, by SMS and during office hours by phone.

- The Back Home Reader meets ISO standards and will read FDX-A / FECAVA, FDX-B, HDX and EMH4102 microchips (10 and15 digit codes). They may be purchased through your local veterinarian or directly from Virbac.
- The Back Home system is international, so pets microchipped in South Africa do not need to be re-chipped when they arrive in another country (pet is simply registered on the Back Home database in the country of export).
